On the 30th of January 2016, my brother and I attended Sydney’s Fat Yaks Ale BBQ festival at the Domain. This was the first BBQ competition on Australian shores to be officially sanctioned by the by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
So I was curious as to the type of crowd the festival would attract. It was a sure-bet that those passionate about their Sydney backyard BBQing would be there. To our our delight though the majority were everyday Sydney siders looking for a boutique foodie experiment on a lazy Saturday.
I’d say very roughly 20% of the crowd owned a BBQ smoker, 60% a simple outdoor grill, and the other 20% owned neither. This pleased me because it demonstrated how the smells and tastes of old-school ow and slow BBQing have penetrated the nostrils and tastebuds of Sydney’s foodie community.
Here is the beast of a smoker that Bluebonnet BBQ food struck was cooking with!
